What does "learning out loud" mean?
This is I'm Learning Out Loud, a newsletter about an instructional designer who is trying to create and launch an online course while documenting it along the way.
Hey everyone!
Before diving into this experiment, I’d like to clarify what “learning out loud” means and where I got the idea from.
To learn out loud is to present one’s learning process as it’s happening, rather than as a final outcome. It resists the tendency to wait until we’re “done” learning and only unveil a polished version of our new knowledge and skills.
I give credit to the following as my main sources of inspiration:
Learn In Public by swyx - Shawn’s essay is my favourite on this topic. He also has a great talk on Youtube where he clearly explains all the benefits of learning in public.
How to Learn Stuff Quickly by Josh W Comeau - This specific article first put me on to swyx’s work. But in general, Josh’s blog is the epitome of this learning exercise and I love how his content has helped so many developers.
French Guy Cooking Youtube channel - Alex’s approach to self-taught cooking is both highly entertaining and educational. His videos feel like mini investigative studies on the dish he’s cooking. It’s fun to watch how he thinks about food and practices his culinary skills.
If you know any other related examples, please send them my way!
You can expect my first progress report in your inbox next Thursday. It’ll be about Setting Goals and Planning An Online Course.

Oooh... So that's what "Learning Out Loud" means. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on creating your online course!
Love this concept. The resource that came to my mind is Show Your Work by Austin Kleon, which emphasizes sharing the process of creation—not just the final product.
